I haven't said anything so far in this post but I'm seeing information that is flat-out wrong, so I'm going to offer my insight.
I would like to point out that as a former PPD trainer/vendor that I find much of the information from the link that Mr. Polera provided is wrong. http://www4.ncsu.edu/~n51ls801/securitydogs.html
It's telling that the author of that link ( David F. Austin ) including this weasel phrase in small print on that site:
"Although I have consulted with experts and have tried to be a good reporter, I am not a breeder, trainer, veterinarian or any other kind of expert on dogs or security."
I think that David F. Austin needs to find better "experts" before he posts long authoritarian articles like that . And a hint for him......don't write about something that you know absolutely nothing about, because you can't tell when you're giving bad information.
Have no doubt that Norman, Jessica, Dennis, Randy, Alyssa, and many other posters in this forum know more about PPD's and give much more solid advice that the author of the article that you linked to.
I'm not a person who immediately puts stock in what they read, especially from unverified sources that I cannot personally and directly question myself. That is why I was happy to find this board. It has been a pleasure conversing with these very knowledgeable people and I certainly won't hesitate to do so again.
Everyone who posted has been very kind to reply to whichever questions I presented. I have faith in what they have said, and I intend to follow their advice.
Thank you again.
My next step is to continue my research, find some clubs in my area, and meet with some actual working line breeders of various breeds, and their dogs, to get a better idea of the presence and personalities of these breeds. It seems, however, that there are far too many breeders fostering some poor excuse for what a particular breed once was, and far too few upholding the traditional intended form. I believe I may need those good luck wishes many of you have offered me....
