We've occasionally asked about this since we spend a lot of time on the road with all the pets when we change duty stations...several thousand miles and a bunch of hotels.
Usually they're just checking for potty accidents and to make sure the furniture and drapes are still intact. They've always seemed more concerned with the furniture than the floor in our experience.

Hmmm, well, there was no deposit on the room we rented - they just charged an extra $75 for a "dog friendly" room! It WAS a Marriott in downtown Providence... so I guess we were asking to take a hit when we passed up the Motel 6 in Pawtucket... but it was a fun stay. You do feel like a bit of a rock star when you can stride through the lobby of a big glitzy hotel - that's been decked out in lavish x-mas decorations and filled with what looked like a wedding party - with a 95lb beast striding calmly along with you...
