what are the appropriate ages to be giving different types of corrections???
example........
shaking by the scruff of the neck....choke collar? also what do you do inbetween when the scruff no longer is appropriate and it may be too late for a prong collar?
Scruff of the neck is ok untill the dog is heavy enough that it is difficult to hold them with one hand, usually 2 1/2-3 months. Corrections are based on the behavior. There is a pretty good method that Lou Castle put on the board a few months ago. You could search for that. Where possible I redirect rather than correct untill the pup is 3-4 months old. Then I use the flat/rolled collar until they are around 6 months. At 6 months I go to a slip collar. This all depends on the puppy. With a handler hard or very stubborn dog you may have to move up the time table. With a soft dog you may need to move it back. With puppies the most important thing is to use the minimal correction to get the job done. It takes some experimentation to find the proper level. By doing some correction work with a flat collar you will find that you may end up needing lighter corrections later.

thanks, i think i will take the advice of trying to stick mostly to verbal commands, i may have been taking ed's words too much to the bone of when he was saying that "one good correction is better than 100 times of nagging.....
but i'm still not sure because maybe if i do stick to the scruff shaking i will get my point across and won't have to remind her of the same things again
