My 2.5 year old female GSD has loved licking me since she was 8 wks. old. No temperament problems or other behavioral problems. I try to discourage it with a "no licking" command when I see her wanting to lick me. I just thought that by now the frequency would be less than what it is. The licking itself doesn't bother me too much personally, but I don't want to encourage it because I don't want her to do it to other people. Am I unreasonable? What do you think regarding her motive? I've not found much information about this in books or on the web. She is obedience trained, will be certified as a therapy dog this year, loves scent work, and she is strongly bonded to me. Thanks. Pam
How is she licking you? This will tell you a lot about why she might be doing it. A no-lick command is great.. keep training that one! I personally don't mind hand licking or the like, but do not like face licking too much. I would discourage face licking, and this is usually a "Gimie a snack" & "submissive" type of licking to a dominate figure. This might give you some insite to the licking act.

Thanks for your reply. To answer your question, she licks my hands the most when I greet her after being gone or on my face/neck if she lies next to me on the floor. Both times she seems really happy.
Well then I would assume, she knows this pleases you and does it for that reason. Plus she might be checking to see if you had any good snacks you were not sharing while you were away! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />
The face and neck area for sure is a submissive gesture. I hope that helps!

Thanks, Lonny. I'm new to these boards although I've read almost everything on Ed's website. I enjoy reading about the training and drives for the various disciplines. I'm just crazy about my dog and have had GSDs nearly all my life. I'm interested in everything these great dogs can be trained to do. Hats off to all of you!
Thanks Pam, I as well love this place and have recieved so much great help here, so I am happy to help someone if I thnink I can. I second Vince's "Welcome"!

Hi Pam,
Just another take on the matter, hope you don't mind! What I did with my licky Lab, was I taught him "Kisses" and "No Kisses". When I first got him, he was extremely licky, but he's much better now. Since I don't mind doggy kisses, I allow him a few every now and then, but when I'm done I say "No Kisses" as I firmly but gently press down on his muzzle. Sometimes I ask for kisses by saying "Kisses", as I present an acceptable part of my body such as the back of my hand, or my cheek. I never allow him to lick my mouth, or the fronts of my hands. For my dog, it is a definite signal of submission and affection. He used to try to use it as a "feed me" type of thing, but I've stopped that by not allowing him to lick near the mouth.
