Time in a crate can vary from dog to dog. I would say, maybe 5-6 hours tops. The puppy bladder can only hold so much for so long, and beyond that dogs do need to stretch their legs, just like wee do after being confined (think of a really long car trip for you, would you want to stretch your legs after a few hours in a car?)
I'm no expert, that's just what I did for my "beasts".. er, dogs.

I would use one hour per month of age (i.e. a 4 month old pup can go 4 hours of "awake" time in a crate) as a very rough guess--to a maximum of 8-9 hours regardless of age.
Why the double-size crate during the day? Is it so large that he can pee in one corner and still lie down in a dry spot on the other side? If so, I'd call it too big.
i was just wondering...
he sleeps through the night from 10pm till 630ish in a crate that is half the size of the crate he is in during the day
This is perfectly fine. I crate my dogs some nights (rotating who gets to be out in the house) and they're in theirs for roughly 9 hours without accidents.
