We're training a deaf Parsons Russell Terrier puppy (11 lbs). I think the vibrating collar is, by far, the best way to get the attention of a deaf dog. So, we came up with the idea of getting a harness and attaching the receiver to the harness--it works perfectly. We're using the Dogtra 175 and attached the receiver with twist ties (temporary) to see if it worked. And, it worked perfectly!
The puppy has had 2 obedience sessions so far. He knows his targets (just hand so far) and we're using a signal of opening and closing hand with a heart beat rhythm with fingers wide as a bridge. He knows the sit hand signal and the come signal (we worked with the owners to see what signals worked best for them). This morning we used the vibration, when Chip looked up we flashed the bridge and gave the come signal and rewarded. In 15 minutes he understood that the vibration means look for us and come right away.
On a funny note, the little guy looks like he's carrying the battery for his pace maker on his harness. His owners thought of making a little barrel to put the receiver in so he'll look like a St. Bernard.
