I need to find some boots suitable for a med sized GSD. For mid - long distance hiking along mountain trails. Probably a lot of flint / rocky paths.
A friend gave me rubber soled neoprene 'ankle' boots but they were hard to put on and because he runs rather than walks, they 'flew' off fairly quickly regardless of how tight they were put on.
Does anyone use boots for this type of thing?
His feet are fairly tough but he does tend to cut / skin his pads really easily, so prevention is better than a cure.
Sadly, I haven't had great results with those Ruffwear boots. I SO wanted them to work out, but Oscar hates them, and I have a feeling it goes beyond his dislike of footwear in general. They're VERY sturdy soled (think proper rubber BOOTS as opposed to nylon "socks") and I don't feel like they actually conform to the paw well - it's like they'd be perfect if the paw was always in mid stride orientation, but once the foot touches the ground and the toes actually bend, the boot doesn't bend with them so well. Maybe they "break in" a little softer... we haven't used them more than about 3 times... and this is just my observation - I can't try them on!
Kristel, is Murphy good with things on his feet in general? Maybe I just have a super sensitive dog?
I think the problem with keeping his boots on and abrading his paws is due to his running habit - he'll run, jump, stop suddenly, skid to a halt, spin around, chase his ball (doing what dogs do). No leash laws here so unless there is stock around no need to use one.

Leather like the ones they use for hounds in brush. They lace up and tend to not twist. They also have the added perk of nail holes in the front for traction.
Like with any boot it takes training for the dog to tolerate wearing them. My lab does just fine with a snug fit but if they're loose they drive her insane.

He's pretty good about everything I want to put on him for some reason.
I joke that he has feet that are as tough as truck tires, but I still worry about things like river rocks. The first place he wore the boots was in water, so maybe that made them softer?

Well, I think you've seen Oscar's variety of holiday hats... so he's a sucker for a lot of things too, as long as they stay off his feet!
And I don't know how water would have effected the Ruffwear boots - we got Oscar's so he could walk on slushy sidewalks in the winter... so maybe the added cold made them stiffer in our case... dunno.
