“The idea that reward and correction are equal is just plain false.”
Come on Dave give me a little credit. I never said that.
“no correction (not allowed in trial)....”
Now what I said was the same argument is made by many that you should not use toys or food to train because they are not allowed in trials.
Sch3Fh2:
You and I are going to join the ranks of many on this board you who exchange a series of posts to find that they are saying the same thing. Richard and I have had our share.
“I would also agree that PUNISHMENT decreases drive, but not that neg. reinforcement or avoidance conditioning reduces drive. They actually increase drive, because survival/fear are extremely strong motivators, more so even than the ball/prey drive.”
You are saying what I was. Again the act of compulsion reduces drive but the result of the compulsion can increase drive.
Vince... my understanding was that you WERE equating the two methods since "NEITHER can be used in a trial"... a ball OR correction.
My point is that the desire for the ball will continue to motivate in a trial... because reward works best when it is NOT given for each behavior (ie. random).
Correction... on the other hand works best when consistent. If the dog gets away with poor performance (such as forging in a trial) this can be a real problem.
Some dogs become "ring smart" once they learn that no correction occurs in a trial atmosphere.
