One of my favorite sites is Working Aussie Source. Every time I go there I'm tempted to just throw in the towel on my high-tech, overly complex life and become a rancher. I don't know how I missed this page there earlier but this is awesome: Pre-Herding Training. This page talks about all the skills you can work on before you ever see stock. It's mainly stuff like "down"/"stop" and controlling your dog from a distance. It seems to me that most of these commands and games could be played with a boomerball.
For now, my plan is to just step up marker training more and work towards some of these "pre-herding" skills. I've read conflicting opinions, but that you don't really start a dog on stock until she's at least a year old. That gives me a lot of time to work on these skills before I even have to decide what to do with her.
Your dog will love herding!
I took my two dogs for their HIC test this past month they both passed.
They had never seen sheep before and it's amazing to see instinct kick in when they got into the pen.
I would also suggest strong OB as well as Bob Scott mentioned.
Good Luck.
