Zeus my gsd (2 1/2 year old 100 pounds, he's lean, not overweight) Hurt his knee last fri. Saw the vet on sat., she examined him and thought he had just a sprain. I also mentioned that he was itching and had some black spots on the skin and she said probably seasonal allergies. She recommended steroids which would help treat the injury and the skin, she she gave him a shot of vetalog, and prescribed prednisone (10mg a day and weaned off at the end) and said I should give him benadryl also.
So far he's doing better with both the injury and skin. He is fed raw with vita c, sal. oil, E. I was wondering if you would recommend any other supplements that might help his skin and joint injury.
I don't know much about supplements other than the ones you listed, or treating allergies, but since you didn't mention activity at all, just thought I'd mention that my experience with dog joint sprains and strains is that one of the most beneficial things you can do to facilitate healing is to keep the dog quiet and limit strenuous exercise. Even if you're giving all the best nutritional aides, if the joints are still being put through rigorous paces, the injured tissue will never have a chance to heal.
I'm assuming you already know all of that, but I had to say it.
Hope Zeus is feeling better soon!
