As the only litters I have raised are Rotts, and all over 12 pups, I have no problem helping mom out and supplementing the pups at 3 weeks. Some will do it, and other won’t at first, and mom is always allowed to nurse as long as she wants.
I wean to raw, so I start out with the Leerburg replacement formula and add it to freshly ground whole chickens (organs, meat and bones&hellip. Ground because the eating of bones is tough for those really little guys. I would often take a couple of backs and necks broken/chopped into 2 or 3 inch pieces for the babies to chew on if they want, and I make sure that there are at least three more chunks than there are pups to avoid food stealing. Again, some start earlier than others, but all keep nursing as long as mom will let them.
No way. Why would you want to do that? The longer they stay with mom the better. It's not just about their physical needs, but about their basic, very important, early psychological development. Puppies removed from mom early can grow up to have serious issues.
I wouldn't take them from mom until they are 8 weeks old unless there is a very serious health reason preventing this from being possible, even if mom's not the primary food source.
Wow. Kristal is right; I didn’t even catch that part of it. DO NOT take pups away from mom at 3 ½ weeks on a permanent basis. Supplementing is fine, but removal! NO WAY.
Yeah, I didn't catch that. If it's the infant cereal then it's full of things that young puppies shouldn't be eating at all, like corn and wheat. I haven't heard of anything similar that would be appropriate for puppies.
I've mixed Esbilac with Innova kibble to ease the transition when weaning, but things that are good for human infants don't transfer well to puppies.
