As OED said, having the vet and asst hold him while they attempted to swab his eye would be very stressful. whenever my boy goes to the vet and needs an ear/eye/rectal exam or gets his intranasal bordatella, "I" control him with both a command and physically. I would never let the vet or her asst (both of whom are smaller than my dog) try to phsically restrain him. It's less stressful, easier for everyone, and safer for the vet and dog if you control, reassure, and soothe your dog through uncomfortable procedures. glad to hear his eye is better though. how's the cat -processed dog food by now I hope. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />
If you really need the muzzle, there are a couple of ways to start with it. With racing terriers, they are required to be muzzled during the race. It's put on right before the race and they soon learn to associate it with fun. The closed, nylon type can be used if you place a treat in it and just give it to the dog so he has to reach into it. The leather or basket type can be "held" on the dogs face and treats passed through. You can also just put it on and reward calm behaviour, not taking it off until the dog relaxes. The muzzle must fit comfortably.
