My oldest Shih Tzu is terrified of storms. She can sense the 'low pressure buildup' hours away and when she starts carrying a little stuffed toy around in her mouth & following me everywhere -- I know it's coming!
She too, has broken out of fences, dug out, bolted through hotwires, been missing 24 hours, etc. As long as someone is here & she's inside -- she's OK with following you around everywhere & whining.
It's those quick thunderstorms that build up while I'm at work that always has me worried. There's just no way to predict them!

Monsoon season is getting ready to start here again and Angel who is almost 9 has always had a fear of the lightning and thunder as well as fireworks loud noises and gun shots. I have found that keeping her inside with a family member there is the best thing to calm her down. She will lay at our feet and calm herself down.We don't baby her or reinforce the negative behavior. I am hoping that Harper will not have this issue but we will see. She is only 3 1/2 months old now. Thankfully we are in a small town that doesn't do fireworks so 4th of July and New Years are not a problem.
