I recently watched a Leerburb Video for Narcotic canine training .The video mentions utilizing wooden dowels for hides and also a larger one as a reward in fixing a particular problem. Since I have not done this is there any tips or issues that have arisen. As far as splintering of the dowels or a particular type to utilize. Any information would be greatly appreciated,

I don't think this is the right section for this, I'm sure a mod will help you move it - there is a narcotics detection forum.
If the dowels start to splinter, change them for new ones. Even with using one as a reward, don't allow the dog to run off and chew it. Play tug with it, toss it in the air and replace it when it gets too mangled. The odd splinter won't kill them.
Buy a length of dowel and chop it into lengths, you'll always have plenty and it's cheap.
