What length of time is ok for a 9 month pup to do the long down? Maybe also some ideas like 4 months = 30 sec, 6 months = 2 min, etc. for the future. At 9 months I have been doing 3 minutes 2 or 3 times a day. The pup does not lose interest as I have the kong ready to go. I also use OK as a release as I throw the kong to him. When can I do the 30 min. stay? Thanks in advance.
There is no answer to this question. Every dog is different. You have to learn to read your dog. You want to keep the dog's interest and not go so long that the dog breaks the down. Of course it will eventually happen, but the longer you can avoid that and keep concentration on you the better.
Rickey,
When I'm working with a green dog of any age and teaching the down, I am pleased with any down. If he downs for 15 seconds I figure I'm batting a thousand. We can extend the down time after we achieve the down. Don't go for too much time at first. Bring him along slowly and make it enjoyable for him.
I work with a new dog for about fifteen minutes in the morning and fifteen minutes in the afternoon and follow that with a few minutes of casual play. That works for me.
