Ok, seems like its one thing after another, our dam with 3 week old puppies has a fever today about 103.5 and is sluggish, we notice that her hide nipples and milk area are much larger then the other nipples, could this have something to do with the fever or is that normal? Also what would be the best way to reduce the fever? - Thanks all, this forum as really been a life saver.
If any of the udder is hot and swollen/hard/painful she may have mastitis. The milk may be off-color or bloody. The fastest way to get her over it is with a heating pad (set on med/high) over a damp washcloth on the affected area for 10-20 min 3-4 X day. This will work much faster than antibiotics, it worked for me every time for several bouts of mastitis.
If the milk is bad it would be advisable to bottle feed the pups (use the puppy formula recipe here on Leerburg) while you milk out the mom.
Mastitis is not something to mess around with. The description you gave is classic. A brief vet exam and antibiotics will be prescribed. The fact that you say she seems weak makes me think you should go sooner rather than later.
I would NOT recommend trying the heating pad thing first. Sure do it in conjunction, but a fever of 103.5 is asking for a dead bitch and a litter for you to feed.
ok we brought her in to the vet tonight it is mastitis we got the antibiotics some hydration and was also instructed to put cabage on her breast thats infected. She had a fever of 105 so we went straight to the 24 hr vet. She resting comfy now!
And yes to use the heating pad as well like mentioned here.
