I'm a new member and need advice. I'm 60, in good health and need advice on what to pursue in a German Shepherd. I'm looking for a companion GSD, I'm not pursuing any particular sport with the dog. I know that training is very important with a GSD as with any dog.
I know nothing about bloodlines with the GSD, if I should look for an East German or West German dog, what to look for and what to avoid.
Being 60, I don't know if I can keep up with a puppy. I Walk daily and work with my horses too. My training philosophy is repitition and kindness. If the horse wasn't responding to a new routine, I went back to something he or she did well and ended the session on a good note, gave alot of praise.
Any advice which can be offered would be greatly appreciated and if someone could direct me to a responsible breeder too it would be helpful
You could send this to my e-mail at dnjohns@netzero.net. Thank you for any help.
Welcome to the forum David.
You have any history with dogs at all?
Is there a reason you're looking toward the GSD?
Say as opposed to a more well known companion dog like a Lab, Golden, or the setters, etc?
In any breed of dog, I think you'd be well advised to stick to the working lines for health and temperment.
There are many breed specific recues out there, one can adopt an older dog of almost any breed one chooses.
You may think towards that venue if you think a puppy too much for the circumstances.
Welcome David. New dog lovers are always welcome here at Leerburg.
Thank you for your response, I've had two GSD's in my life and have found them to be an intelligent dog and devoted. It is a breed which I admire and would like to own again. My main concern is for the dog, proper care, training and feeding. I am a firm beleiver in training, horse, dog or any animal. Kindness though through traing. May take longer but, the results are better and more permanent. If an animal is afraid of an owner it can be dangerous. Thank you again.
I've enjoyed reading the letters from everyone regarding their dogs.
David
I second looking at German Shepherd rescues, they are often already basic obed trained and if not its and opportunity to get out and go to training classes
