When I started feeding raw a couple years ago, I heard a bunch of people say that they give their dogs beef marrow bones to chew on for recreation and teeth cleaning. So I've been doing that. But a month or so ago someone posted on this forum, that their dog had to have a root canal for a broken tooth from chewing on one of those bones.
I'm wondering if this is common. I had heard that these bones were softer and safer than the sterile bones at the pet store, and safer than Nylabones. Now I'm not sure. Just wanted to see what you all know about this. What do you give your dogs to chew on? Kasey seems to have a need to chew more than just his RMBs.

By handle them, do you mean what condition is the bone in when he's done? If so, I always buy the bones that have thick walls so he can't break them or get pieces of them. He LOVES them, even after the meat and marrow (which I take half of it out) are gone, he still chews on it. He is a moderate chewer I would say, so he makes grooves in the bone, but he doesn't break them. But I definitely don't want to pay for a root canal because his tooth breaks!!
Any alternatives?
I searched under recreational bones, but didn't find anything. I'm lame at searches!
I have loved giving rec. bones to my "scrapers and lickers" but my current dog (and his sire) have actually bitten chunks off shin bones trying to get to the marrow, so no rec. bones for those two. I think if the dog can do that much damage to the bone, it can damage his teeth just as easily. I'm also concerned about what would happen if they swallowed the bone-shards that they've broken off, since they've been pretty sizable with sharp edges.
As alternatives I like pizzle sticks, orbee balls and any of the 'everlasting' toys. They still get to lay quietly and chew but without the risk, and even our toughest chewers won't try to take chunks out of the rubber toys. I've found that as long as I rotate them, the dog stays interested too.
