I've been taking Erika swimming at the local lake and one of the things I've noticed was she's not very boyant. I know Labs have an oily coat that I think makes them float better and water repelant, I was wondering if I coat her with a lanolin product like A@D http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/83576/the_many_uses_of_ad_ointment.html
she'd float and swim better
A couple times a week I take my kayak up to a local lake. Frost likes to go along so I got her a life vest for safety reasons. Here are a couple shots of her in the kayak on dry land since I won't take my camera with me on the lake :-)
Since these photos, I have attached carpet to the helm of it so she has traction and she sits there and uses it as her launch pad to jump in for a swim while I kayak :-)
Once she figure's out how much effort it actually takes, she'll do ok. My first Rott dove in after our Lab and sank like a rock. Right as I was going in he got his nose up and got to the edge of the lake. He ended up as good as the lab.
Caleb loves to swim but he does NOT float. He has to work constantly to keep his head above water. It's awesome exercise for him. If he jumps in, he sinks immediately and then pops up w/some pretty intense effort on his part. It is much harder for him than running or anything else, judging by his breathing.
Fat dogs float. Like fat people. Muscular dogs sink. Like muscular people.
