I've been trying to figure out which collar will not turn my neck black. I got mine at Petsmart and it turns herneck black. I was told to order a stainless. So which is it? She also gets her neck irritated easily as she has no undercoat. I also read that the stainless is good for pets with allergies or problems with metal? I put her through pet smart training all the way to advanced. I just started her at the "Dunes dog Training club" and they tested her right into the beginner class. Some training , petsmart cost 40 dollars more too!
I guess I'll get the stainless one. I forgot to mention the trainer at our new class said she didn't need a prong so I got a choker. (They also had a chrome plated prong for salebut at that point I had read about the allergy reduction of the stainless.) I don't like chokers cuz she coughs at first when she starts walking. Also she is getting over her dog aggression and I feel as though I have more control with a prong. I started her with a gentle leader and then switched to prong. After the color staining I switched back to gently leader until I could get a stainless. The trainer did not like the GL at all. She said "All that does is create dominance. What happens when you don't use it?" I'm like "She pulls" I'm really excited to start her with a "real" trainer. I want her to be ready for the CGC test in August.
UGH! I used the stainles HS and it turned her hair again. It seems to be only at the chain part. If I look closely it's appears soddered and the metal is more gold. I'm returning it. I wonder if I should even bother with the chrome. I did not purchase it here as I found it cheaper. It says Sprenger on the top prong and the rings say Germany. Oh wait I just reread about the brass clasp causing the problem. I'm going to wash her and try again tomorrow. It was only right at the top of her neck and only two spots rather than a ring like the last collar.
The Stainless shouldn't discolor the coat. The allergy you're referring to is a Nickel Allergy & the stainless will contribute to that b/c of the Nickel in the SS. The best option for a nickel allergy is the Currogan collar, which is a Copper-Tin alloy.
Thanks for the heads up on the Curogan collar. I tried again and it is indeed the collar. My other dog is all white and does not become discolored so I'm thinking it is the nickel allergy you mentioned. I have found a site that sells the collars.
