I just got the basic obedience tape and allready learnd a bunch of mistakes I've been making. I thaught by correcting after the dog didn't listen was the way to go but the tape taught that I was being unfair to the dog. I allready see a differance in how Booch wants to train. He is so much happier training now. I will watch the tape again and again untill I know everything by heart. My next tapes are going to be competition obedience and the focus and grip tape. I'm glad I spent the few $'s now and not alot later.
Yes, the motivational method produces the happiest results and builds a stronger team. I'm fading the corrections out, really I'm bouncing back and forth once a dogs knows the command, he should be corrected if he is slow or ignores the command, right?
Under distraction some times they will ignore a command, especially if it is awesome lure of a bitch in heat. But that doesn't matter he should obey me no matter what. Eventually anyway, they are about 89-94% proofed.
I find myself quoting Flinks a lot, but he is one of the few standards (along w/Ed and this board) I have right now. Anyway, yes the dog should be corrected for not listening to the command, but must be immediately be put back into drive when they re-obey. "Drive-compulsion-drive"
