Our 12 week GSD puppy was scheduled for her puppy shots this week, but I cancelled them. She had a strange infection and was put on a 10 day dose of antibiotics a week ago. She finishes that tomorrow and everything looks good from vet perspective - blood work etc. How long should I wait until I can schedule her puppy shots?
Wanting to do this responsibly - will follow a modified Dodd's protocol. She had shots at 6 weeks (with breeder not me) and now I want to do one more round of only distemper and parvo and then that's all. Will prolong rabies as long as possible.
Want to give her the best chances, so was wondering how to boost her immune system in the next week or so - and to see if others thought that was enough time.
Check your local laws - in my jurisdiction rabies shots can be given after 16 weeks but are not required until 6 months of age.
So if your jursidiction does not require rabies until 6 months, you could give the parvo/distemper at 5 months (I would stagger them from the rabies shot if at all possible).
It also depends if you are going to be around places where there are other dogs (puppy classes, parks, etc). If it were my puppy I would wait at least 2-4 weeks before doing distemper and parvo unless you forsee having to be in a dog-populated area.
Definitely agree with Lynne on the probiotics! That is the single best thing you can do for your puppy after the round of antibiotics.
I have been giving her probiotics at lunch - antibiotics at breakfast and dinner. So it sounds like I should continue that at one of her meals for several weeks. And you are right about wanting to keep the rabies and other shots apart. It wasn't that big of deal when I thought her shots were going to be around 3 months and then rabies at 6 months or later. Now they could be closer, so I will have to look at the schedule.
I don't plan to do classes until about 6 months - mostly because of my scheduling reasons. But we do go to parks and playgrounds and such where dogs have been (and peed, no doubt). Should I limit that or is the danger direct contact with other dogs?
