My male has just shattered some more teeth running into a step, rather badly too he is going to need them out.
He's had 3 General Anaesthetics in his life, each time responding worse than the previous one. The last one he was lethargic (barely moving) for almost 3 weeks, totally different personality, not well at all.
The vet believes as it was a short lasting anaesthetic, that it was the sedation that did the damage. So they plan not to sedate him and to use a different drug.
Has anyone had a similar problem? How do you resolve it? Are there some drugs safer than others?

I usually look for vets to use Iso (Isoflorine) though, I may not be super up-to-date there, I think most do, here at least.
What anaesthetics has he been reacting badly too in the past?
(and sorry to hear about his teeth. Hope he's not in too much discomfort!)

I can't remember the names of the drugs to be honest - because of his reactions we've changed drugs each time.
Normally when he breaks teeth it's to chip them or break the tip off. This time one is broken off but both have totally shattered fascias - so it's an immediate surgery required job.
He looks like he's in pain so I have given him some of my bitches arthritis medication.

He's an idiot! who doesn't look where he is running.
That's my best conclusion, he ran into a parked lorry and broke the two middle bottom ones. In a seperate incident he snapped the top off of one lower fang after running into a wall - requiring a root canal. He then chipped the remaining lower ones somehow.
Today he was playing fetch and ran into some concrete stairs.
Obviously this has been spread out over sometime - hasn't hurt himself for months.

I would check back in his chart with whoever did the previous procedures to find out for sure what was used.
I would also read both of these discussions, the first of which is from an anesthesia specialist. On the second, scroll down to "Anesthesia."

In February I had a dental workup (cleaning, X-rays, an extraction) done on a senior brachycephalic dog. The gas was Isoflurane and the injectable was Propofol. The dog woke up very quickly after the procedure. (My scares in the past have all been during the post-surgery pre-waking period.) I was extremely happy with this choice. The dog wasn't even dizzy, sleepy, and stumbly when he came home a few hours after the surgery. By the next morning he seemed completely recovered and normal.

What is the med?

Wow, that's crazy.
This thread is timely b/c I have made the decision to get Neb (16 months, I was hoping to wait until 24) snipped, and this is the aspect I am most nervous about (and that his Teagan fixation will not end, but anyways). So thanks! Glad Connie posted!

Tanith,
I know this wasn't your question, but how is this dog's vision? Have you had his eyes checked?

Yes I have, also had teeth checked to see if they are soft - both fine.
If he's in drive he just doesn't focus on anything but the ball.
Mainly after the first few occasions I managed the situation by only playing in wide open areas and we haven't had an issue - anytime he got near an object I could stop or recall him. I relaxed my guard yesterday and broke my own rules.
Bless the lunatic, he's obviously uncomfortable, keeps licking at that part of his face. No point in taking him to the vet, they won't consider it an emergency, so won't do anything until Monday anyway - also it'll cost me £120 for them just to see him as an emergency ($200 in your money) and that would literally be to look at him - I reckon the surgery will be £150+. I'm going to ring the vet a bit later to see if I can book him in for the morning.
Arthritis med is Metacam (Meloxicam) - it's a liquid, only dog painkiller I have to hand - think it's an anti-inflamatory painkiller.

I was right, vet said not to bring him in as they would not do this type of thing as an emergency.
They're going to try and squeeze him in tomorrow morning but they have a full mornings surgery already. At the least they will give him proper pain relief and book him in for tuesday.
