85 lb. GSD running full speed on recall who is too excited to remember to stop and sit at end of recall can knock over 300 lb. man.
Hans is usually only off leash in the back yard. Tonight I took him across the street to a large common area, called The Bowl, in our home owners association. It is a sunken area that is larger than a football field. Usually when I call come, he comes to me and ends in a front sit. Well, he was too excited to do this. I put him in a down, walked away, and called him, and he just came running at me at full speed. He was not at all interested in applying the brakes.
It's kinda scary when you suddenly realize that he isn't going to stop. Gotta work on that.

The only dog related injury I have do date was caused by just that. Golden retriever at full speed as applied to my right hip will cause trauma from me striking the ground that will put me out of work for two days.
I hate that feeling. You don't dare to move to the left or right either, in the off-chance that the dog intends to swerve at the last instant. All you can do is turn your back to the charging dog so that your knees bend the right way on impact, should the inevitable occur. Yeah, enthusiasm is cool, but brakes are nice too.
No, I wasn't hurt. I should have explained better. He has knocked me down before, but last I was able to side step and avoid going down. Had I taken the hit straight on I would have gone down. I knew not to let him hit me straight on because the last time he did that I did go down and it did hurt.
