Too much emphasis is put onto the "alpha" status of a human when considering a fearful or nervous animal. A fearful or nervous dog does not automatically gravitate to whichever human is the most dominant, it is the human that is calm and confident. Being a leader is not just about "being in charge" and having your dog do what you say because you said so and you call the shots.
Was your mastiff pup automatically introduced to and allowed to interact with your BRT? You may have caused him to become more doggy. It is easy for an unsure young pup to become more comfortable with other dogs and not humans if you do not seperate them from other dogs and show them that everything good comes from you. I do not allow my pups interaction/play with other dogs until they are over a year old.
