yes, when capone had his first session, he didn't show much, if any interest, and he never had. he just stood there(looking like "this is soooo dumb").
He showed hesitation, but not fear.
That is where i think i would be worried. Having a fearful dog over all.
Has the pup showed the same behaviors in other situations, or is the fearful behavior isolated to this one venue? If the dog does startle easily, and shy away from strange things/sounds-does the pup recover quickly, or are you guys done for a while after that??
My dobie is in the more timid side, but I think its due to more a cautious personality than a scared one. She isn't scared but very willing to approach other people, but once a person is petting her, she becomes cautious or thats the best way I can describe it. When a person approaches she is the one pulling on the leash to investigate.
I have been doing obeidience training through correction training since she was 5 months, which at about 7 months my trainer asked to try protection trainer and have her evaluated. So I came into the training as a hobby and not for real work. I have read around, and found that obeidience training and/or correction training can kill a dogs drive. I am gonna try stopping the obeidience training and work on building her drive, which she still has, but seems to have diminished some since the OB training.
Since this thread is in the "Personal Protection Dog Training" forum, I'm aiming my replies towards someone training for PPD work, which again the dog doesn't sound like it has the temperament for.
If the dog is being trained as a sport dog, there isn't the chance that a failure in protection could lead to possible injury/death of the handler in a critical situation, so my reply would be different.
Generally speaking, if you buy the dog and THEN decide you want to have a Personal Protection dog, odds are your dog isn't cut out for it. Continue your obedience and maybe dabble in sports if someone will bring that out of the dog, but I wouldn't want to train the dog as a PPD.
It's hard enough finding a good doberman when you ARE looking for one.
