It appears that the product is viable but more questions were brought up in addition to the questions answered.
Parent and surrogate odors.......Like you, I would be interested to know what the dog actually smells as well. Here is an analogy that might be comparable to parent/surrogate odors....
The perfume/cover scent industry; We all know what strawberries, oranges, peaches etc etc smell like in their natural form. When I smell a chemical recreation of those odors there is no doubt something different about them. Not only is the odor stronger..it has somewhat of a "Chemical/un-natural" aire about them.
Question is...do I recognize those man made odors as a replica of the real thing? Yes. Could I tell someone what those odors represent in a blind smell test? Yes. Do different manufacturers of the same odor have a different smell? Yes. Is a positive indication the final outcome? Yes. Do they smell identical to the real thing? No.
You know that the human nose isn't close to the capabilities of our K9 friends. We don't know exactly how each individual dog learns, or what triggers they are using when learning the odor. I wish they could tell us in our language then it wouldn't be such a mystery.
My analogy isn't quite comparing apples to apples as the scent of naturally grown produce isn't the same as man made chemical concoctions but you get the idea.
There are so many variables involving the training of the EDD that it is insane. We may never know it all. We can only reduce the amount of problems that hold us back as best we can.
I'm one of those hard core, use the real thing, guys. I'm not 100% close minded on pseudo though. It seems that my writing this response indicates that I could be swayed to use this product. Because of so many unknowns, it would be ignorant of me to not consider an alternative to the real thing.
I definately don't have the knowledge you have. I respect your opinion and to see that you have had a decent outcome with this product, and the way you wrote the piece about it has me reconsidering my stubborn ways.
