We keep a spray battle of white vinegar to clean up our puppies pee if we miss him starting to go (we still manage to get him outside to finish the job). This evening while at my computer my puppy decided he wanted to eat the carpet under my computer desk I was sitting at. I tried redirecting but he was really going at it. I sprayed one shot of vinegar on the floor while i held him at bay. When he came back he sniffed sneezed whined and laid down. Any harm to dogs noses with this over sour apple?
Yes, many use diluted vinegar in a spray bottle and spray in the air (away from the face). What I heard is to start with 1:5 dilution and go up to 1:1. Some (not all!) dogs hate even the smell of vinegar. So if you're lucky enough with your pup, vinegar water can be wonderful to stop bad behaviors on the spot! Unfortunately mine loves it (and Bitter Apple too). No harm to the dog, of course unless you make him drink lots . It does and should burn eyes.
While I appreciate that spraying vinigar water at/near a dogs head has worked for some, I would advise anyone from thinking that any correction “should burn eyes” and that spraying anything at a dog (near his head) could or should “stop bad behavior on the spot!”
Burning eyes intentionally or as a known result is inappropriate. I would never think to correct a child in this manner and training a puppy is very similar to how to teach a child.
Also, burning eyes last a lot longer than any correction should. A correction should stop the known bad behavior and then be over instantly.
As a chewing deterrent, it is fine (spraying it on an object), but as a correction … I would strongly advise against it.

.... I do appreciate that you decided to spray the floor and not the puppy. I'm not a fan of people using spray bottles as corrective devices.
I am not a fan of it either.
And I am not a fan of any lasting-pain correction such as "can and should burn eyes." By "lasting," I mean anything that is longer than the split second of application (like a leash pop).
As Jessica points out, a correction, if needed, is instant -- and over with.

I would say no harm to this. I have dogs who like the smell of both, as Cherlee mentioned. But I'd take advantage of it the way you did if it worked!

Just wanted to add that this is a good thing, to have the puppy "finish the job" in the right place (outdoors) and also to party down for outdoor pee.
Even better, increase the number of trips outdoors so the mistake occasions are minimized.
