Anyone have any experience with a dog who is afraid of unknown smells?
Jake has indicated several times that "something in the air" is really scary as far as he is concerned. Tail tucked, partial crouch, ears back, nose up and out- smelling away.
I never smell whatever it is... with the exception of the car wax that he was terrified of (some all natural something that smelled like coconuts).
When he's on leash I try to stand there calmly until he calms down a bit, then march around as if it was no big deal. Sometimes this works, sometimes not. Any ideas here? It's hard to predict what will be scary- especially when I don't really smell anything. I always just end up dealing with the reaction, and I don't always have an exceptionally good treat with me to help congratulate him when he calms down. Sometimes we're just out in the yard, something will blow in and he's running around barking at the wind.
