Kristel, thanks for detailing your method. Sounds great! (PS, your initial method of using your voice instead of the leash to get his attention falls in line with the info on the Michael Ellis DVD. I've been doing some of that, so I think I'm headed in the right direction)
And a word to any new puppy owners who might be contemplating the use of a retractable leash like a Flexi. DON'T!
I used a flexi while Chula was a pup, and I think this drove home the association that tension on the leash while walking is an OK thing. With a Flexi there is always tension on the leash...
I used a Flexi when Murphy was a puppy too. I'm realizing now that it wasn't a great idea. They literally can not escape leash pressure when on a Flexi, either standing still or moving. A nice, slack long line is a much better idea.
