My dog has started to crawl as I am walking away from him in the down under distraction and the moving down. In both cases when I tell him platz and keep/start walking away with my back to him, he crawls forward a couple of feet. Any suggestions on how to stop this??
Post 1. It sounds like you need to go back to
walking away facing him on leash or long line, correct him if he breaks the down or moves, then prasie him when he in the down.
Do this until you can back away and he stays put, after you can do this then turn your back, watch your watch for 30 sec to a minute. Go back to him and praise build on that until you can do it without a leash walking away.
Post 2 Or have another person on the long line and when you turn your back, and he moves they correct him, you will still need to turn around and praise him when he is place. But if he doesn't really know the command, down mean don't move, until realesed, you need to start with the post 1 .
Yes, he used to stay down and not crawl. Platz used to be his strongest command. When I see that he has crawled, I have been going back to him and putting him back with a correction and then backing away and he doesn't budge but when I turn my back he crawls. I can get him to stop crawling during a training session quickly but then the next session he starts it again. I have started picking random times at home and putting him in a platz for up to 30 minutes and he stays great but then I am not walking away from him with my back turned. I just go about doing what ever I was doing.
Boy those Rotts are stuborn, aren't they. But once they get it they got it.
Was there a particular incident that stared this crawling is this only when others are around. I mention this because you can leave in a 30 minute down at house and ignore him. There seems to be a change in enviroment or that people or around that makes him cling to you/ break the down stay.
Do you use just the down or the 1. down then 2. stay command? Not that it matters because he does so well at home. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
