Luke is 11 weeks & i have not trained him at all with regard to a leash. i just let him pull. he is not to bad with pulling. i snap the leash when i need want him to come to me. Note: he has on a regular buckle collar. but lots of times he refuses to come usually cause he is digging / eating dirt!!! & i have to literally drag him away from what he is doing. si, i got a choke collar for him (not the metal kind) but have heard you can dammatge a small pups neck at this young an age. is this true? whould i wait till he gets older? if yes how old?
thanks,
Nick
Gerlert's master, returned to find his son gone & his crib bathed in blood. Seeing Gerlert's bloody mouth he stabbed and killed the dog. The noise woke the baby, hidden in the blankets. Under the bed,was a dead wolf. It's throat had been torn out.
Try a good leather/nylon collar - however - bring the collar high on the neck, just behind the ears. Tighten to where you can get a couple fingers under.
Take the pup for a lot of walks on leash - you can use food treat reward AND a ton praise.
Many have an opinion on choke vs. prong (pinch). I prefer the leather/nylon collar till around 10 months, then I add the prong collar still with tons of praise and sometimes a food reward, especially if it's something the dog has had a tough time of catching onto.
My 14 mo old GSD learned obedience pretty well -- the down he wants to still not do -- but with a treat --- he's liking it better. I will then wean him off when I'm happy with his downs.
Choke collars SUCK, IMO. If there's a need for a real honest to god correction, I go to the pinch collar. But 11 wks is way to young for that. It's time for the good old motivational techniques, so that the dog WANTS to come to you. Coming to you guarantees food, toys, play, walks, whatever the pup likes the best.
Thanks all, will stick with the old collar for now & will revaluate choke vs. prong later on.
My pup hates downs also. He will sit quick but plays stupid when told to down. I think its a dominance thing, or I should say a submission thing. in which the down signifies submission on there part. therefore causing it to be a dominance concern. just imo.
