I have a 7 and 11 yr old...well two other girls...but they are smaller. The 11 yr old really loves all animals. I have always involved the two of them as much as I thought appropriate. Right now I have one GSD that I still activly train and a Border Collie that I thought would be fun to train...which has somehow turned into my eldest daughters dog. She has taken over all of her training and takes care of her daily. I direct her in how and what the dog should be doing....but she is the handler. I have to say that I am pretty impressed with her desire and ability. I hope to make her a working dog handler instead of just a pet handler...but that will come with time and experience. The two of them are AWESOME kennel cleaners...lol. Which they both hate to do it but still do.because like Kevin said...they get paid pretty good for doing it.
My 11 year old daughter comes to my obedience with my female pittyx and then goes in the basement with the frenchy/boxerx and tries the stuff on him. My 14 year old son used to run with the big black dog, but now that he's on the Middle School Football team and doesn't have weight restrictions he's only run about 4or 5 times over the summer(He would run to drop those 3 lbs). My children refuse to feed raw so hopefully lightning won't strike me dead or they'll be back on kibble. The pittyx seems to favor my son, and the frenchy/boxerx favors my daughter. I didn't really get involved with training a dog until I was 18 and we got our first Rotty. I think it takes a bit of maturity to realize the training benefits the person as much as the dog. I think my kids both have a healthy respect for animals and that's really something I've always hoped for.
