Nice, informative Forums! I started K9 handling about 1.5 years ago after retiring from 20 years of law enforcement software development...boy walking dogs sure improves the health after sitting behind CRT's that long.
I work for a small K9 Service company in Missouri and we have contracts with U.S. Treasury, U.S. Army in western Wisconsin, and a lot of rural schools. I was fortunate to start with 2 seasoned dogs: a GSD bomb dog that's a joy to work with and a Golden Retriever that's perfect for schools.
We are retiring the Golden and I now have another Slovak import GSD for drug work. He's 1.5 years old and is imprinted so my major work is going to be obedience training. He's pretty young and I'm introducing him to my house animals with limited success.
Looking forward to reading the topics and possibly going to marker training.
After 20 years of law enforcement software design, installation, etc...I cashed out and semi-retired. Met up with SNIF owner and he was looking for a part-time K9 handler. What a blast! I'm a newbie to training, but have learned over time to read-study-implement-make corrections-implement some more...
I've got 2 house mutts (rescues) and 1 daughter still at home. My oldest daughter retired from the Marines with 20 years and is working for a security outfit in McLean VA.
Thanks all for the warm welcome! I'm probably going to spend a good amount of time reading and working with the company owner to get my knowledge ramped up.
I also took a "vacation" from my paid hobby of detailing exotic cars (I've got a Photobucket account full of them): Ferrari, Porsche, Ford GT40, Lambo's, Vipers, and a ton of Beemers for a local dealer. It was fun, but tiring trying to meet customer deadlines. With K9's I can work at my own pace.
