I do flyball here in the UK with my 3 collies and my jack russell, and they adore it, it can be a lot of fun either competitively or just for fun. Only issue is the age of your pup, as with agility etc, flyball can put a lot of stress on the joints of dogs with the turns and jumping they do so until you add jumps or train the flyball box it's worth waiting until your pup is fully developed , especially important as he is a GSD and a larger breed.
The way i started my collies as younger dogs is to introduce them to retrieves using a tennis ball to start with throwing it for them to bring back and then the handler sending them away to a ball that has been placed ahead of them by someone else other than the handler and, then progressing this on until they are being sent to take a tennis ball from velcro on a board and retrieving it to hand.
If you have a dog that loves to run at speed and play with balls then flyball can be very rewarding!
Yeah, I heard about her not being of age.
I was planning on not training her with the box and jumps till she's around 18 months old, and if she did like it... Not to get into at competitions till she was 26 months old.
Just doing obedience till then and like you said playing with the ball.
I haven't heard of any GSD in flyball since I've been researching, have you seen any ?
I have seen a few over here doing it , ranging from some who do it for fun and then some who compete very successfully obviously most GSDs don't reach the speeds small collies do purely due to weight and stride but doesn't mean they can't compete !
