I'm having a lot of trouble with my stubborn male making him drop immediately, he tttaaakkkeees his time. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" />
When I give him the command on a recall, I move in towards him, he is always so fast coming to me, and put my hand on his shoulder and push him down, most of the time I take him to the spot where I told him down too.
While next to him, I just step on the leash putting preasure on his neck, but none of this seems to be working.
What's a good way to make him drop instantly?
Carolina,
When you first began to teach him the down did you use force to get him to go down with a snap of the leash or a push on his back end? From experience in training the down with dogs, I have found that using a positive reward rather than negative will result in very fast drops and a dog that is eager to perform.
No my obedience school does it differently. We do the treat on hand and from a sit we bring the treat down to the grown and when they are down we tell them the command. Then when they know the command, if they don't drop when told to we step on the leash putting preassure downwards.
Sam knows the command well, even with hand signals, he just takes his time.
In my opinion Karen is right on here. You want to keep things as positive and motivating as possible........if the dog does not comply, then there is NO reward. If you keep the training positive and fun then you will see some very quick downs.
oh yeah.......one more thing. My dog seems to be more motivated by the bite tug, so when he complys on the "down command" then I will give him a bite for his reward. You also might also try to keep the obedience short and fun until he downs quickly, because if the obedience is long and drawn out with a bunch of compulsive corrections, then that will KILL a dogs drive faster than anything!
Carolina,
Next time you give your dog the down command as soon as his whole body makes contact the ground (whether slow or fast)throw his favorite toy his way and play with him. Timing is important so that he will connect obeying the command with the reward. Keep it fun but only for a few minutes at a time which will keep his interest peaked. You can play this game several times a day. I bet in no time you'll have a dog that will be eager to hit the ground. You'll want to use a variable reward once you are solid.
Good luck!!!
