I got so much great info last time I thought maybe I could get some suggestions again.
I have a GSMD pup that is almost 7 months now and he is learning finally thanks to everyones help.
One major problem area is he doesn't realize how large and powerful he is and doesn't know how to be nice with his paws. He tries to play with smaller dogs and also our cats. They come to him to get used to him but he "wacks" at them really hard. Also I am trying to teach him to use one of those doggy doorbells to go outside and he can't push it, he just swats at it.
He needs to be kept on a leash around the other dogs & cats. You need to not allow him to do it. Period. He needs to be trained to be nice or is not allowed to socialize with other animals. He is a pup & needs to be trained to know what is proper behavior.
I would use marker training. I teach a 'be nice' command. This would mean that the pup doesn't swat push or shove you, another animal or to get treats etc. I have a cat in my house & my dogs are taught 'be nice' from the beginning starting from when they are taught to take treats nicely without nipping or grabbing. I just expanded the command use to include being nice to the cat. They know that 'be nice' means to take it easy & be calm & be respectful. My male will try to put his paw on the cat ( he thinks that he has to domainate all the members of the pack) if he doesn't then he is told 'no' & is removed from being with the cat if he doesn't comply. He likes to play with the cat so he will be nice so that he can enjoy her company. Just what I have done.
Thanks that is great advice. He is actually gentle with me mostly and takes the treats nicely because I wouldn't give them to him otherwise. He is actually on his leash all the time. I don't even think it is so much a dominance thing as he doesn't realize how strong he is. He swats or pushes or shoves me. I wouldn't tolerate that. I think he just wants to play. Thanks for the input.
