.... Genetics do play a part... He went to work with me everyday for 6 months from 8 weeks old & everywhere else that I went. He was still terrified of everything & fearful aggressive toward most people that even came close to his bubble. So much for genitics & socialization.
I like Jenni's explanation that I recall from a post on a different thread. 'Even dogs w/ great genes can throw a nerve bag' (or something to that effect)
You guys are so naughty. I'm gonna make Connie a new pair of gloves for Christmas....
In terms of the actual THREAD (ahem) I'm pretty sure a monkey could train my dog. I like to think that he's well-socialized, but he might just be well-bred
Yes, Lynn, this does unfortunately happen. He was a super dog in every other way...great drives, brains, athletic & a big ole hunk of fear. Very sad to say the least.

I agree with your assessment! A dog with a solid temperament will bounce back from a bad, or even traumatic, experience. But socialization can help a dog reach his highest potential. A dog which inherits a good temperament, but misses out on almost all human interaction during the "socialization period", from 3 to 15 weeks, will still become feral. A dog with a less than solid inherited temperament, can overcome much of his deficiencies if well socialized and trained. Events that happen during a fear period, will last a little longer, but not cause life-time changes unless the dog has a poor temperament. And then, would he have become the same without that triggering event? Perhaps so. Often when a dog begins exhibiting fear or aggression in adolescence, people assume some event caused it. It is most often inherited but may have first become evident during a stressful moment. (In a large breed adolescence can last anywhere from 6 months to 2 yrs.)
