Good evening all,
It's time for my latest and greatest problem I've been faced with. My golden retriever is smart as a whip, and shes come to learn things very quickly. However she has developed enough intelligence to understand when she can get away with things.
I've been training with her now for 2 weeks, (mind you its retraining. so she knows the things) In my stay commands, (sit stay and down stay) she will be good as long as there is nothing of interest to her around. If something grabs her attention she is gone. How can I prevent this. Is there an easier or better way then a correctment.
Mark, I'm new to this myself, but it sounds like your dog needs training under distraction. If you haven't already, you should check out the Basic Dog Obedience video sold on this website. I just got it and it's got tons of good info in there, and lots of it focused on dealing with distraction. But basically, yes, you need to do corrections.
There's a demonstration in the video where he's got his dog in a down/stay while other people come and pet the dog, and he doesn't move. That's a well trained dog!
The sacred mantra of "stay" training....repeat it after me...
Time
Distance
Distractions
Train the stay for time, *then* for distance, and finally for distraction.
You have the opportunity to correct the dog easily during the time and distance phases, as you're usually close enough to give an easy leash correction. Those phases need to be steady before going onto the distraction phase....and I mean really steady! Most people push their dogs past the level that they're actually ready for, and problems then arise.
Think of it as the canine version of the "Peter Principle"
Well put Will. I would also add that each next step, go back one step. When time is good, and distance is added, shorten up the time again. When distractions are added, shorten up the distance again. Sounds so simple, yet as Will said, most people are to impatient to do it correctly.
