I read in various places that pork neck is a good choice for RMB. I gave one to my 21 lb terrier and it took him an hour to eat a .2 lb size piece. I watched him the whole time because I was unsure. he managed to get through it all.
would you say that pork neck is too tough for him and that it may be risky to feed him this? should i be worried about cracked teeth or choking? or both?
Pork neck bones can be very constipating if feed too much. I find this more so then most other RMBs. I feed them but not as freequently as other RMBs. I have large dogs 65lb & 75+ lb dogs so I have never had a problem. I would feed some extra meat when feeding them. I always keep an eye on my dogs when eating, just in case. I am minimally concerned about my dogs cracking teeth. I have had pups try to swallow whole backs & necks & start to choke & have to pull the bones out of their mouths. They usually only do this a couple of times & then figure it out. There are many here that feed very small dogs & cats raw with no problems. I hope this helps.
i'm not worried about constipation... just safety. Marley likes to crush the bones first. I'm not sure if there are dogs that can be considered gulpers but if that exists, my dog isn't one of them. He's never given me a reason to be worried about how he handles food. that said... i'm still on guard.
at what point should I be concerned?
I've given him large chunks of beef bones and from what I've read... that's generally a no no because of how hard they are. But the way he eats beef bones is by scraping it with his teeth... not so much trying to crush the bones with his teeth. this is largely because the pieces i give him are pretty big.
Generally pork neck bones are safe. They are edible for most every dog.
Worried or not, pork neck bones are just what they say they are. Bones.
Because of this, constipation, possibly severe, is a real concern. When disregarded, it can be a safety issue.
Actually tooth breakage and choking are the last safety issues on my mind when I think about pork neck bones. Constipation is first.
I still feed them, but I take that fact into account and adjust that meal or the following meals to account for the extreme lack of meat on pork neck bones.

exactly why I wasn't concerned. i'm still figuring it out but I think he gets good meat to bone balance. I adjust accordingly.
