I'm so glad to hear he's okay!
I don't have pet insurance, because I looked into it after my dog already had symptoms that would deem him ineligible. But I did do Care Credit. It's a life saver. No interest for 12 months. I should have it paid off way before then, but it certainly was a blessing right now with the holidays around.
I had a surgical & mortality policy for 10 years for my competition x-country horse...but back then a colic surgery was $5-15+ grand thru the years.(alot more now I would expect) It served me well in a number of instances & I had a wonderful very reasonable policy premium & underwriter(Lloyds of London)for that policy. It was about the best available back then insuring many of the high level grand prix & other high level show circuit horses.
I don't have it on the dogs.. Have found that there are way too many non-covered issues & between the deductables, exclusions & the usual & customary fees are not high enough to cover the costs in my area to justify the premiums. You would be well-served to put the same amount of $$ away monthly that you would to pay for a premimum for a policy. You also can't even get mortality on a dog that I could find with only 1 exception (extremely costly & over priced) even for a highly valued competition or show dog. (there may be something out there now for mortality, but there was only 1 company 5 years ago when I inquied from AKC & elsewhere) JMO

Ok, so had him checked out and he had a cut/small puncture in his gum. Doc thought he might have similar cuts in his esophagus which could be the reason for his gag reflex when drinking. Nothing blocking his belly or intestines which was a relief. She prescribed some anit-inflammatory anitbiotics and some pepcid to coat the digestive tract and stop whatever infection may be going on. He got some fluids and hopefully will be back to normal soon. Thanks everyone.
What a relief!
Just a reminder that if the dog in on antacids right now, you don't want to give a raw diet during the antacid protocol.
Antibiotics are 250mg Metronidazole at 750mg/day aka Flagyl. He's doing better so hoping for a full and quick recovery. He's fed Orijen so he's clear on that raw/antacid thing, but thanks for heads up.
Hi Todd,
I just purchased some insurance for my two GSD's, it is for the major accidents and illnesses, but I didn't buy the wellness care plan because I feed an all natural diet and feel they are naturally healthier on that.
But if you want the details on the plan and company I used, you can PM me and I'd be happy to share the details.
