So he's still a happy friendly wiggle butt on walks but is mostly nervous at home?
You're being confusing if this is the same dog. We need clarification to help you. We want to we just aren't clear on what exactly is going on. Just being nervous in general points to not being socialized with people. Being comfortable elsewhere but not at home changes things a bit.
Good obedience training can help with confidence and making him a better companion/pet for you. My opinion would be he doesnt have much else in him. I admit I'm guessing, but I get the feeling you didnt get him from anyone who breeds dogs actually capable of being much more then pets.
Latoya, I think this is your answer. Are you doing any obedience training with him?

You can teach a dog to bark when someone knocks at the door, by the way...

Well when I mean he is fearful I mean he is fine when I take him on walks. But when someone knocks on the door he runs to his crate, when I take him outside to potty at night he runs back to the house if he hears the slightest noise. Yesterday someone walked across the lawn and passed our window and he kept pacing back and forth from the window to me.
Now I want to know if it's the same dog! I'm going to assume that it is, and that he's either always been fearful at night or something caused him to be fearful recently. Conan needed some treats at night to make him more comfortable in the dark. I don't know why he's skittish outside at night, but he is (and he's had a lot of night time socialization). Some dogs just don't have what it takes to be a guardian. Conan is a great watch dog. He barks at everyone that passes, but he'd run for the hills if they ever came inside. I don't think true protection is something you can teach a dog, I think you can only use what the dog's temperament gives you to begin with.
