After helping my wife raise her puppy and raising one of my own back during high school, I wanted to hear the opinions of active owners in regards to the con's, if any, of getting an adult dog for myself as opposed to starting with a puppy. The breed I have been considering is Doberman. I have read up on the breed and have found it suitable for my needs and comfort and I feel confident in my ability to meet its needs.
The main purpose of this dog is guardian (not protection training) for our new home. I imagine that though mostly it would be an outside dog, it would be allowed inside during the cold season here in sunny california!
Dog can't 'guard' a house from the outside. If you are talking a dog that will bark at unusual noises or people coming on the property...almost any dog will do that or be trained to do so. If you are talking protection dog, that's a whole other thing. Pups are a crap shoot as to what they will ultimatley turn out to be, even with the 'proper' genetics. If you relly feel that you need a protection type dog you would be better off with an dog that is in the 18 mo old age range ( green dog )to be sure that it has what you need for the work. But the price goes up the older & more trained a dog is. Continued training is needed to maintain the dog etc.etc. Just some food for thought.

The advantage to an older dog is that you have passed the puppy stage and it's kind of you get what you see. You can also test for certain things like HD.
And of course you have a better idea of what they are suited for.
Puppy is more of an unknown BUT you are not going to have someone else's training bite you in the butt.
Jeffery,
ALL dogs can be trained/taught to obey the basic commands.
Seek out unusual noises/occurances is very different from barking at unusual noises/occurances. One is, I'm going to take care of this, the other is what the hell! someone will come out to help if I bark.
Careful what you wish for.
