I posted this question under the "e-collar" section but had no reply. I really need some advice on this - can anyone help answer my question ?
Hi,
I am new here - looks like a great forum.
I have just purchased a Dogtra 200NCP e-collar (first time I am going to use an e-collar)and I am busy reading everything I can. I have 3 GSD's and have been involved in training for many years. I have been told by a Training Associate that I should not let the dog wear a choke chain/prong collar or any METAL collar at the same time as using the e-collar as it could get hot and burn the dog or could also result in a higher stim being given than was intended.
Is this correct ? I had intended to use the e-collar and spike collar at the same time for the dog to get used to the stim from the e-collar. I am now a little unsure and would appreciate some expert opinion on this. I am reading all the posts here and also on Lou's site so that I have as much information as possible before I begin with this remote training.
I have heard the same thing about not using metal collars at the same time. I have, however, used the remote collar with a prong but this depends on why I am using the remote collar. And just because I do it, doesn't necessarily mean you should <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" /> I have never had a problem though. I do ensure that the collars do not touch, and maybe I'm wrong (wouldn't be the first time), but I don't see how they could interfere if they are not touching.
Speaking from experience, Never ever have I had a problem and I've trained quite a few dogs in my business with that combination. I don't know if it will ever happen but it has never with me.
Lesley - I constantly tell new dog trainers that they need to be careful about who they listen to - EVERYONE has an opinion on how to train a dog - problem is very few people have any experience to back up their opinion.
The issue of wearing a metal collar at the same time as an electric collar falls right into that category. This advice is so WRONG that you need to remember who this person was and disregard anything else they tell you. It's demonstrates a complete lack of knowledge of collar training.
