I have sold the pup I wanted to keep, Aria. The buyer and I have had a lot of trouble finding a way for him to get her. He really didn't want to ship her, so we waited around for him to have the time to come pick her up from Virginia, then a few other things came up, and long story short...she's still here.
Someone suggested that he look into USHIP (an ebay company) for a dog transporter b/c she would ride in a van w/an insured person who specializes in this sort of thing. It's about half the cost of shipping her on a "normal" airline and about the same as shipping her on Pet Airways, but they are a PITA, thus far.
Anyway, does anyone have anything good or bad to say about this? Any experience? I figured I'd ask here since many of you know me well enough to know my standards. Naturally, ANY means of transporting a dog is risky, but I will NOT take stupid risks just to get a dog from point A to point B faster. Yes, he techically owns her, but seeing as she's currently in my possession, I have quite a bit of influence over how she will and will not be permitted to travel.
Thanks in advance!
Aria says thanks, too.

BTW, I'm still waiting to get the actual name of the company doing the actual transporting. I know USHIP is just a database, but there are certain screening criteria so I still thought it was pertinent to ask.

I would not ship a pup thru a transporter and have refused in the past. Two many unknowns from the character of the driver to how many dogs are being transported.

Jenni, maybe you can find someone that you know that will be traveling in the vacinity of the new owner & would be willing to take the pup with them for the trip. The new owner can then maybe meet them within a days drive of where they will be. Not too many people with some dog knowledge would mind taking care of a pup for a day or 2. Just a thought. Better than a complete stranger that you know nothing about.

Which was the PITA so far? Pet Airways or the USHIP service?

Just a thought Jenn, but what, Virginia to Illinois is not a long haul and if your buyer isn't interested enough to get the pup to him.........

Connie, Pet Airways is the PITA. Still might do it but not sure.
Anne, thought of that...trying as we speak.
Betty, that's not the case at all. Plans got shot to $h!+ on all ends, lol.
If anyone is heading from Chi town to Virginia, lemme know!

Sometime on a new thread if you get a chance, would you talk about that? I have some plans made for 2010 that rely very heavily on using them.
And back to USHIP/dog ...

Oh, Connie, it's not that kind of thing. It's more an issue of over the top requirements (shots, etc.), the fact that they let them out for "potty breaks" (terrifies me!) and their general outlook and standard of behavior. I was not impressed w/their general knowledge of certain requirement-related things. For example...DHLPP is REQUIRED. Yet they say lepto is optional. HUH? Oh, and you can submit a titer for distemper and rabies. But you still must have a yearly DHLPP. And they also have to be current on Bordetella. That tells me they don't even know what a DHLPP really is, for one.
We were trying to get her booked and they weren't answering the phones for almost 2 days. Granted, it's Christmas, but still. Then, they finally called back and practically begged him to book her, but it's really looking like he's just going to come get her.
