As far as him being calm in the crate I try and he sits but then still gets excited. He will pee in the cage rather than be calm enough to let out. He seems to be calmable(That is able to calm more easily) the less the time he has been in the cage.
Try practicing in baby steps. After he has been out for a while, crate him, ask for a sit or down, then open the crate and let him out. Maybe do this a couple times in a row 2 or 3 times a day. I would imagine he'll soon figure out that he can be calm in the crate and that it is rewarded.
You can also work on teaching him self control out of the crate. I use a mat and teach my dogs that it is highly rewarded to lay calm on the mat. Use a marker and start in baby steps go from touching the mat to standing on the mat to laying down, to to a relaxed down.
You mentioned that you haven't done much in the way of training. I would start doing basic OB and marker training with him. Good training helps to build a dogs confidence in a positive manner. And mental work will help wear off some of that energy.
OK will do. I think baby steps will do the trick. I use "Yes" as a marker. He has never been to official obedience class. he does walk well on the leash and heel. I am enrolling him at Tatum Kennels for obedience and private training. http://tatumkennels.freewebspace.com/
