It looks like finely ground pepper that turns dark red when you get it wet.
I find witch Hazel to be a great soother and mild antiseptic for raw spots, I just put some on a cotton ball and gently hold it to the area that is raw or irritated. You should be able to find it in the same section as the bandaids and alcohol/peroxide at the grocery store.

Thanks Deb,
Can you tell me the name of - or ingredients in - the product in the "green can". I live in Canada and often cannot purchase the same item as you have available in the US
Cheers.
Hey Bev,
they have udder cream at quite a few stores here in Canada.
Wal-Mart for one and im almost positive they even have it at shoppers & rexall/pharma.
You should be able to find it pretty easily.
Edit: if you do plan to go that route, i'ld be pretty careful about putting it on a puppy....if the pup ingests too much of it, you might have a problem.
You had asked in an earlier post about his stool being a bit soft while you are switching him from Purina to Orijen (i think that's what you said).
How gradually are you changing it?
might be you are moving a bit too fast for him on the switch.
So what(!) kind of dog are we talking about that we have to worry about hypothermia in a northern clime, and making all kinds of excuses and adjustments for?
I live in much the same latitude as the op, and I know many short haired breed owners who have no, absolutely no problems with temp and their dog going out for exercise or whatever.
I'm glad to hear it Randy - being a first time dog owner, I am so grateful I can ask what appears to some as silly questions and receive mostly helpful answers.
To answer your question. My 10-week old pup is a beagle/? mix. He's adjusting fine to the snow and once his fur grows back, as he lost most of it to a reaction to something, he'll be a fine Canadian Dog!
