I have a large kitchen that is approx 20' by 12". I have a 9 1/2 month old malteese mix. I have fenced off one third of the kitchen for her to stay in while I am not home. She never has any accidents when I leave the house. I do crate her but not as much as I used to because she is very reliable. I have now tried to remove the gates to let her have the full run of the kitchen but when I am not looking she will go to the far end of the kitchen to urinate. How can I keep her from doing this? She seems very good while I am with her in the kitchen, but when out of sight for a second, she goes.
Thanks, Mary

Hi Mary,
although it's hard to wait, sounds like the pup really isn't ready for that kind of freedom yet.
There really isn't any such thing as Housebroken Part of the time...she's either house broken, or she's not. There is not in between (unless there is a medical issue)
When you say you don't crate her because she is reliable, what are you refering to?
Reliable in that she doesn't get into things or reliable (somewhat) for not going in the house?
Also, for training purpose's I would tether the dog to you when you are home with her.
You stated that she will urinate when you are not in her sight, so problem solved because if she's tethered to you, you won't be out of her sight, and she won't be out of yours. That way you can see when she's about to urinate and take her outside immediately.
