I agree a 1 hour walk sounds too long.
sometimes if he/she seems rarin' to go on the way home, it may not be real energy, but just anxious to get home. A young pup usually feels insecure away from home so eager to return.
I would say a pup that young gets plenty of exercise playing with you in a yard. Lots of short times running about, and lots of naps at that age. You'll have plenty on your hands in a few weeks. Enjoy the "big sleep" weeks while they last!
When my dog was this age *nothing* tired her out like learning.
I think the hand touch is the perfect game for a pup. Its super fun for them, easy enough to teach and it keeps them thinking. Right now you can make a fun game out of it, when he's older you can use the foundation of targeting to teach him all sorts of stuff.
My dog thinks is the best thing going! Her favorite is when she is out at the end of the 50 foot line in a stay and she gets released to run full speed through my legs and "touch!"
