My 6 month old Gsd has great prey drive and love to play tug but when I let him win the toy he takes and runs off with it and it almost like I have to chase him down or divert his attention with another toy to get it back. I have tried even food and he wants that toy so much he won't come to me- should I keep him on a long line?
Also when he is in prey drive he won't listen to anthing I say or do his only concern is to keep his toy or keeping tuging- for example if a cat walks buy he wants to get the cat so bad it takes a pretty hard correction to get his attention with a prong collar?
If he is on a long line he can't run off. If he is not reliable on recall he should not be off leash ever. Training levels of distraction need to be trained & takes time. A cat or squirel or chipmonk etc are pretty high levels of distraction, even for well trained adult dogs.
Proper e-collar training may help, if you choose to go there, but I'd me more concerned about keeping him engaged rather than corrcting him for his lack of interest in you.
ETA...Oh geeezeees ...I just reread this....this is a only a 6 month old puppy. You're expectations are pretty unrealistict, I think, for a baby! 6 months is still VERY much a baby. Enjoy your baby & play & bond with him or her. Training takes time & you should just be enjoying training your pup. You don't have to go zero to 60 in 4 months. Take your time & have fun.
